OK, so I've finally sent off my entry to the fashion156.com and Start London design competition, and here it is. I was dubious whether to post it or not, as it's quite personal (and there's the issue of plagiarism, but that's what you get with having the world wide web I suppose?). It's one thing to post and comment about someone else's work, but when it's your own it takes on a whole new level of importance. Anyways, it is loosely based around the Samurai amour you can see in my moodboard. Using this initial idea, I did a few basic sketches and then began draping on the stand. Let me know what you think...but don't be too harsh eh!?
I was a bit worried about the colours being too on trend, if you get what I mean. They have been all over the catwalk for SS09, but I had to think of something which would be wearable, commercial yet conceptual and would fit in with the upcoming spring/summer collections - the winner will be sold in Start boutique in Shoreditch and online. It took a lot of research and a lot of thinking, but I am happy with the final outcome, so let's just hope the judges agree!!

I think you were right to go with those colours.... there are aspects of course which have been seen before.... the exo-skeletal thing....the colour blocking but I think overall it fits the brief perfectly....I love it! Hope you win....
Does it have pockets? I think it should...
Hope you win! (send me a copy of the dress when you do. hahha!)
no, seriously, I like it very very much!
(The picture on my blog is not London, it's from last party I had in my lovely island the past weekend. At London We went to Shoreditch two nights, I don't remember the name of the places but we had a lot of fun!)
Wow! Amazing...on point in all aspects! You will win this!
amazing blog
beautyfull photos!!
me encanta!
des braisers!
:)
FUCKIN BEAUTIFUL!!! I love the color blocking and I think it's a smart move to do that. The details are really well executed and I don't think pockets should be included. If someone actually used them, it would mess up the silhouette, but that's just my opinion.
GOOD LUCK!!!!
Carl, it looks great! Don't worry about the plagiarism, if it ever ever pops somewhere up and you know about it, you've got the original files and sue their asses off. :P
these look wonderful, the dress on the bottom is strong, clean and i say versatile!! best of luck!
xo s
so good. i would pay very good money for that dress! :) (hint!!!)
good luck!
I love exoskeleton styles in general and your work is lovely here. The colors are a bit too neutral for my general taste, but I love the shape of it. I think even the shape of it would be more apparent once it's worn on a model! Great job, and good luck! :)
xx-LJ from SOS!
This is fabulous, I'd love to wear this shape. x
what a great entry, I'd totally wear this and I love the shape. It's also totally reminiscent of this incredible kurosawa film i watched this weekend - Harakiri.
whoa
that's beautiful
if i ever went drag (uhm..which would be never)
i'd wear that!
it really is beautiful
i was going to say i wish you would have used some different colors
but thinking about it
i like these colors
(and no unfortunately the art piece you saw isn't mine, my brother found it in a dumpster and thought i would like it :])

Everything is perfect!
I will keep my fingers crossed for your winning!
it looks great and i love your inspiration for it. i think it should have pockets too.
dearest carl, i'd love for you to add me. i'll add you as well!
I really love this dress, the color blocking, the shape, the inspiration for it. I hope you win so I can fly to London and buy this beauty!
Really enjoy looking at your work, very inspirational. The only thing i would add is pockets if it doesn't already have them.
Beautiful though,

I have looked and I have pondered and I think the dress is beautiful.
It's a wee bit Jean Pierre Braganza-esque but I think the design, in it's own way, it's quite classic.
Elements like the draping, hips structure and the armour plating-like waist detail are winners for me and I'd wear this dress in a heartbeat. I'd buy it too.
I love the progression of ideas too and how you have stripped it back in the end, so it shows that you ultimately understand that it must appeal to the Start customer. Well done - you deserve to win...and that's my honest opinion.
You creative geniuses just blow my mind. This is incredible! It just amazes me how the artist's brain can create things like this. I hope you win! :)
I really like the colours too. You're so talented, Best of luck for the competition!
Good luck with the competition!

I especially like the draping effects and the back looks very interesting. Wonder how this will suit the body.

I have missed your blog so much!
Thank goodness for free wifi in coffee shops.lol
Carl Starling, I have waited for this, and I'm so happy to see it! This looks fantastic!! Don't you know that? God, I think you might win the whole thing, I really hope you do. I've gone to fashion school, I've learned draping, and I know what it takes to do this dress. You have true talent, this is magnificant work! I love the design as well, it's contemporary but it looks totally new. The lines are stunning, and the shape is beautiul. I don't understand why some of your readers says it should have pockets, who on earth would have their hands in pockets when wearing a dress like this?
Wow, this is really well done! I love the whole armour influence. My very best wishes to you for the comp. xx
so i'm a bit late to congratulate you on your entry work but it's a great design, i'm curious to see all the possibilities within a larger collection stemming from this design- I also think this piece would be phenomenal in a tonal color palette (grays or nudes?)- needless to say good luck!
i like your color combination
i absolutely love this design, it is really really beautiful. i would certainly buy one if i could afford it! will it be in pink? i think i would personally prefer it in nude and white.
looks fantastic. really enjoying your blog as well!
